On October 22nd, 2009 Treatec 21 Industries Ltd. inaugurated at an I.D.F. camp in the south of Israel their first, state-of-the-art MSBS (Multi Stage Biological System) for wastewaters depuration without generation of excess sludge.

This advanced MSBS system, capable of handling ca. 100 m3/day and converting them to a tertiary-level quality effluent, depurates the camp's wastewaters which were so far directed to absortion cesspits and/or to the surrounding wadies - and from now on will be used for irrigating the groves surrounding the said camp.

Delegates from both the Israel Ministry of Defense and the I.D. F. who participated in the event, boldly expressed their appreciation for the short time required for installing and operating the system, as well as for the effectiveness of Treatec 21 Ltd.'s process and the positive results already achieved.
 
On May 2010, treatec21 has initiated a 200 m3/day pilot inside the aeration lake of "Nisgav" in Gedera. The technology used, Multi Stage Biological System, allows for upgrading, building and operating of aeration lakes with ability to reach high quality of treated water under low costs.

UV Technology and Advance Oxidation

1. ULTRAVIOLET (UV) TECHNOLOGY

NATURAL TREATMENT SYSTEM USING NO CHEMICALS

 

UV has long been known as a natural process of purification. Ultraviolet technology offers a proven and accepted, environmentally friendly method for wastewater purification.

All microorganisms can be effectively destroyed by UV light in the 200-315 nm region, resulting in their loss of  ability to infect humans, animals, food and plants.

Today,UV technology is increasingly replacing traditional chemical disinfectants due to the following features:

  • Absence of harmful by-products. 
  • Reduction in the use of chlorine thus increasing saftey, reducing storgae safety issues. prevention of further contamination of soil.
  • Increased effectiveness when compared to alternatives (especially against viruses)
  • Savings on space and reduced maintenance costs, as no chemicals are introduced into the water. 

UV INACTIVATION MECHANISM

The UV section of the electromagnetic spectrum is compounded by three main wavelength ranges) UVc,UVb,UVa,( which have different effects on the DNA, RNA and proteins within the pathogen's cell.

The DNA and RNA have their absorption peak at 265 nm.

UV light also induces photochemical reaction in proteins, enzymes and other molecules) in the range of 240 and 280 nm) to ensure complete destruction.

PERMANENT INACTIVATION

Research work and accumulated experience suggest that UV mediumpressure lamps cause permanent and irreversible inactivation of faecal bacteria like Escherichia coli. Whereas exposure to the same medium-pressure lamps cause also permanent deactivation of pathogenic E. Coli O157:H7.

TREATEC21’S ADVANCED UV REACTOR

Treatec21’s UV technology uses medium-pressure lamps and amalgam lamps, combined with a state-of-the-art quartz reactor providing an highly efficient and a high-density radiation profile which ensures permanent and irreversible inactivation of all relevant pathogens, including Escherichia coli.

Today, modern wastewater plants are designed using close pipes rather than the traditional open channel systems, while due to environmental considerations the use of contact tanks is no longer necessary.

Closed-loop systems save floor space, prevent algae growth, protect the operators and enables flexible flow design and operation.

The UV lamps incorporated in Treatec21‘s system are positioned perpendicularly to the flow ,forcing the microorganisms to pass through the area of lamps close to or in the high intensity zone. (while in open channel UV systems, the laminar flow reduces the exposure of microorganisms by passing through an area of low intensity UV and therefore resulting in a lower UV dose).

Treatec21’s UV reactor is made of a high-quality stainless steel.

Its inner structure is based on quartz tubes with a special configuration that trap the light by using a mirror effect.

This unique effect of the structure enables to increase the density in the field of radiation and therefore achieving higher efficiency of the reactor.

SMART BALLAST OPERATION AND CONTROL

Treatec21 Industries ltd. uses state-of-the-art electronic ballasts,offering numerous unique features for maximum system performance and operation ,reflected in:

Treatec21 controls are based on high-quality components from leading suppliers.

The system includes UV intensity sensors mounted onto the lamp arrays, thus providing measured intensity values.

The exposure time is derived from the UV ratio and the effluent flow rate.

The energy control unit enables to receive the required UV dose with the lowest energy input.

 

CLEANING SYSTEM

The system includes an automatic cleaning mechanism to prevent fouling of the quartz sleeves.

2. AOP- ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESS

TREATEC21 INDUSTRIES LTD. OFFERS AN ADVANCED OXIDATION REACTOR (AOR) BASED ON ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESS (AOP)

 

THE AOR

The AOR is an efficient reactor consisting of high intensity medium pressure ultra-violet lamps, housed in an advanced optical reactor providing a reflective surface that traps the UV light and increases the effectiveness of the AOP.

 

THE AOP TECHNOLOGY

Advanced oxidation process is a novel technique to produce hydroxyl radicals by direct photolysis of hydrogen peroxide under UV radiation.

H2 O2 + hv      2 HO*

The hydroxyl radical (HO*) is among the strongest oxidants found in nature and in the “chemist’s toolbox”. It is extremely reactive and promptly degrades any available organic molecule.

The maximum absorbance of H2O2 occurs at 220 nm. In order to increase the process effectiveness, a medium-pressure lamp whose spectral output matches the absorption characteristics of the H2O2 is used. If complete mineralization is achieved, the final products of oxidation are carbon dioxide and water.

The unique design of Treatec21’s AOP is based on inline perpendicular reactors: such an in-line design is aimed at saving energy, reducing footprints and  operating costs by using a structure made of a single quartz optic tunnel; which traps the light to ensure maximum operating length. In order to maximize the reactors efficiency, the incoming water is pre-filtered and circulated  via a reservoir.

To enhance the process when necessary, Treatec21 ’s AOP process includes photo catalysis and photo-Fenton reactions H2O2-Fe(II) (Fenton reaction) and H2O2 {Fe(II)/Fe(III)}/UV-visible (photo-Fenton): thermal redox reactions between Fe(II)/Fe(III) and H2O.
